Are you looking for a name for a new baby, or a character in your story?  How about the perfect name for your Xoloitzcuintli or Nebelung*?  You'll find many, many possibilities in these extensive lists.  I've been collecting names for around fifteen years now, and have amassed around 50,000.  Rather than tuck them away for my own personal use, I've decided to post them here.

Many of these names are not available on any other name definition list to be found on Google.  Indiana University's research libraries have been invaluable in providing literature from around the world, particularly those from Africa.  I hope to post the names listed by nationality soon, although those are still in the process of being cleaned up and made understandable to someone other than me.

The listings are fairly straight-forward.  As an example:

Job - Hebrew, "the afflicted"; Ayoub, Ayub, Ayyub, Eyub (Arabic); Jov, Jovčo, Jove, Jovo (Bulgarian); Ioŭ (Byelorussian); Job (Czech, French, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish); Job, Jobbe (Dutch); Job, Jobe, Joby (English); Iob (Finnish); Hiob, Job (German); Iyov (ee-YOHV) (Hebrew); Jób (Hungarian, Slovak); Giobbe (Italian); Jobas (Lithuanian); Jov, Jove (Macedonian); Iov (Romanian); Iov, Jöv (Russian); Job, Jov (Serbo-Croatian, Ukranian); Ayubu (Swahili); Ayuba, Juba, Yuba (Tuareg); Eyüp (Turkish)

Job is name this would be sorted by alphabetically - you'll find Job between Joachim and Jocheved.  The origin of the name is Hebrew, and the meaning is "the afflicted".  After that, you'll find the same name in different languages.  So Iob is Finnish, Jobas is Lithuanian and Juba is Tuareg, but they're all variations of the same name.  I'm hoping this is all pretty obvious.  You will find pronunciations following some names - in the example above, that would be the (ee-YOHV) following Iyov.  It's as phonetic as possible, but be aware that I'm a Midwesterner and that might have an unintentional effect.

Please note that some of the lists are rather long and may take a little while to download.  Since this is a continual work in progress, and I plan to be updating frequently, I don't really have time to reformat each individual WordPerfect file, split it into smaller files, add navigation buttons, etc. for each letter.
